The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) calculates that 13.5 million employee days were lost to business due to stress in 2007/8. Research for Human Resource magazine in 2007 indicated that 70% of HR professionals feel that stress is a problem in their organization, with 50% of private sector and 64% of public sector HR professionals saying it had become more of an issue over the preceding 12 months. According to the HSE, work-related stress accounts for over a third of all new incidences of ill health. Each case of work-related stress, depression or anxiety related ill health leads to an average of 30.6 working days lost.
Employers have duties under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 to assess the risk of stress-related ill health arising from work activities; and under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 to take measures to control that risk.
